When I was a little girl, I lived with my grandmother who lived in a small village each summer. In the beautiful countryside, I had a lot of friends and got very close to nature, and we enjoyed picking flowers and playing with dogs and chicken every day. But there was one problem, my grandparents were poor and the village is lack of commodity. There were no electric, candy and toys and I was naughty and picky. My grandparents loves me very much and wants to try their best to be nice to me. The only way they found to fancy me was delicious food.
My grandmother is an excellent cooker and she can make incredibly meals by using any materials. She picked fresh vegetables and chicken feed herself. So these dishes have a special taste I cannot find somewhere else. I still remember a special dishes called "fried peanuts", it is very yummy and every children loves it. It is special because of the peanuts. They are picked from the old tree behind the yard which has leaves are like spoon and the peanuts are on the edge of the "spoon". It is kind of weird because I never see another tree have leaves like that. Many years later, I heard that the peanuts are not the fruit of the tree, but the eggs of worms on the tree. However I cannot find a proof because the tree was cut down and my grandmother was dead.
I couldn't remember the details of the story happen between my grandmother and me, but the taste ingrained in my mind forever with my grandmother's great love and my memorable childhood. I am very sensitive about food. I think food contains love, hope, courage and happiness. Every time when I share the delicious food with people, I remember the deep love and kindness of my grandmother. Eating experience just means the experience of being loved and loving others for me.
Dear Eater! What a lovely blog entry post! I am pulled in by your story about your grandmother's cooking and about the mysterious "peanuts."
ReplyDeleteI need to think more about food as representing the emotions you mentioned--love, hope, courage, and happiness.
Do different foods symbolize different emotions?
Can food also stand for something negative?
So is your mission to explore the world of food related to memory and emotion?
